HISTORY
|
St. Gabriel's Parish was established in 1843 after the Irish and German families had begun to settle in Hammondsport. Up to that time only occasional Masses were celebrated by missionary priests from Java Center, Wyoming County, Dansville, Penn Yan, Corning and Bath. In 1847 St. Gabriel's Parish purchased the Presbyterian Church on Church and Pulteney Streets. Then in 1886 a new frame church was constructed on the corner of Church and Shethar Streets. This church was destroyed by fire in 1909, and the present masonry building was erected the same year. Although St. Gabriel's Church has withstood many tragedies, including the Finger Lakes Flood of 1935, the spirit of the early St. Gabriel's Parish carries on today. |
